Profile of Dr. Aretha Aprilia, ST, MSc

Dr. Aretha Aprilia, ST, MSc, is currently working as 'Environmental Specialist & Business Development Officer' at CDM Smith, Jakarta, Indonesia. She has previously worked for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Bangkok as the Coordinator of the Asia Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED) Showcase Facility. Upon her resignation, the UNEP Regional Director awarded the Certificate of Appreciation for "Outstanding Performance".  
She received the 'Green Talents 2017' award from the German Ministry of Education and Research in Berlin, Germany. She was also awarded with the "50 Most Impactful Green Leaders (Global listing)" award by World CSR Day and World Sustainability, presented in Mumbai, India. She was the sole representative of Indonesia for this category. In 2011, she was selected as Climate Change Professional Fellow by the US Department of State for a 5-weeks program in New York and Washington DC. In 2013 she was nominated as the 'Most Powerful Woman' by Her World magazine and received the 'Young Professional Caring Award' by Martha Tilaar group. In 2016, she was selected as one of the “50 Most Inspiring Women”, whose photo was featured in Central Park mall Jakarta.

She holds a PhD in Energy Science from Kyoto University Japan and received a full scholarship from Schlumberger Foundation. During her PhD, she served as Consultant to Mitsubishi Research Institute Tokyo, Institute of Global Environmental Strategies, and reviewer of the international journals, i.e. ‘Waste Management & Research’, ‘Journal of Geology & Geosciences’, and ‘Science of the Total Environment (Elsevier). She also conducted research collaborations with Tokyo University and Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2016.

Invited as the facilitator at the Focus Group Discussion at Kalbe Farma on the issue of Extended Producer Responsibility and Waste Management; as a speaker at the international workshop by World Resources Forum in Davos, Switzerland; speaker at the international seminar 'Biomass: Capitalizing the Green Gold' at Erasmushuis, Jakarta; speaker at the international seminar 'Sustainable Aquaculture'; etc. Additionally also assigned to deliver lectures on Research Methods and to supervise students’ research on solid waste management.

To conduct the research on waste management in Indonesia with the perspectives of energy, economics, and social, that aims to propose recommendation for Jakarta municipal government the most efficient MSW management for household wastes by taking into account different scenarios with the life cycle energy and life cycle costing methods.

Responsibilities:
Prepared the research on waste management in Indonesia for the PhD programme. Prepared a paper on “Waste Sorting for Biogas in Indonesia”, which was delivered at the International Sustainable Energy Symposium in Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, November 2009.

November 2006 – July 2009, Coordinator – United Nations Environment Programme, Regional Office for Asia and Pacific (UNEP/ROAP), Bangkok, THAILAND.
Main project:  Asia Pacific Forum for Environment and Development (APFED) Showcase Programme for innovative environmental projects in Asia and Pacific region.
Key Responsibilities:
§      Coordinated the Asia-Pacific small-grant programme with over US$ 1,5 million to support innovative environmental projects implementation in the region.
§    Monitored the implementation of 37 projects in 17 countries, in cooperation with 7 research institutes.
§     Delivered presentations to: 1) APFED eminent members (including current and former Ministers of Environment in Asia Pacific, directors of various UN agencies, director of prominent research institutes, NGOs, etc) at the Plenary meeting in China and Philippines, and 2) APFED Secretariat and Network of Research Institutes at the follow-up meeting in Japan and Sri Lanka.
§    Coordinated the information dissemination of funding opportunity, which resulted in three-fold increase of applications' volume with nearly 350 proposals in 2008;
§     Attended APFED functions on behalf of UNEP, including at the APFED Side Event in Bali.

Received the Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding performance as Coordinator of the APFED Showcase Facility by UNEP Regional Director, Dr. Young-Woo Park.

Ø   Oct – Nov 2009, Consultant, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES), Tokyo, JAPAN. Responsibilities: Participated and prepared the full report and summary of the “Regional Climate Change (RCC) Conference on Developing a Framework for Regional Climate Change Impact Assessment and Enabling Local Action”, held in Kyoto Research Park in October 2009. The conference was attended by representatives and academia from the countries in five different continents to discuss about various issues on climate change.
